Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of perfluorocarbon liquids used during vitrectomy for managing complicated retinal detachment. Methods Thirteen cases of retinal detachment with giant retinal tears or severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy were retrospectively studied. Results All patients were followed up for 2 to 10 months and 12 eyes were found to have retinal reattachment postoperatively. Visual acuity was improved in 10 eyes and better than 0. 1 in 6 eyes. A subretinal droplet of perfluorocarbon liquid was observed postoperatively in 1 eye. Conclusions Experiences with perfluorocarbon liquids have demostrated an effect to improve the anatomic and visual outcome for complicated retinal detachment.
