Abstract

OBJECTIVE To determine the efficiency,tolerance,treatment compliance and safety of a single-dose(1 200 mg)miconazole nitrate compared with seven consecutive treatment of miconazole nitrate(400 mg daily) in treating vulvovaginal candidiasis(VVC).METHODS One hundred and sixty-eight outpatients with VVC were included and randomly placed in two groups of eighty-four patients each one.Each group was either given 1 200 mg miconazole nitrate for one time or 200 mg daily for seven days.Before the pharmacological treatment,each patient was evaluated clinically and microbiologically,as well as at the end of treatment(day 7) and one-month(day 28)after treatment.RESULTS A significantly greater proportion of patients in 1 200 mg group experienced complete symptom relief by day 3,but no statistical differences werefound between either treatment group during clinical and microbiological evaluation when evaluated 7 or 28 days after pharmacological treatment.CONCLUSIONS The result reveals that a single-dose therapy with 1 200 mg miconazole nitrate is as safe andefficacious in curing VVC as seven consecutive treatment of miconazole nitrate intreating signs and symptoms of the infection as well as equally effective in the microbiological elimination of the causing agents of the VVC,but the time to complete relief was significantly faster in a single-dose of 1 200 mg miconazole nitrate.
