Abstract

Zhang Taiyan was a famous scholar in modern China.His literary views of the doctrine of Returning to the Ancients include returning literary concepts to the early Qin Dynasty,and advocating that poetic creation should follow the example of the Wei and Jin Dynasty.However,his ideas are contradictory.He has strongly criticized tradition and resisted the new culture revolution and vernacular literature and he degenerates into the cultural conservative at last.Zhang Taiyan′s literary views of the doctrine of Returning to the Ancients embody the transitional characteristics of his period and deeply reflect the internal conflicts implied in Chinese cultural development.
