Abstract

The objective of this work is to investigate the γ-irradiation treatment of pentachlorophenol(PCP) in aqueous solution. The variation of the PCP and chloride concentration and the bio-toxicity was measured before and after irradiation. The effect of the initial PCP concentration on the degradation was also investigated. The experimental results show that γ-irradiation is able to successfully degrade PCP in aqueous solution and the radiolysis of PCP is in accordance with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. For initial PCP concentration of 25 mg · L-1 with a radiation dosage of 4 kGy,the degradation efficiency was 100%.The same result was obtained with an initial concentration of 50 mg · L-1 and a dosage of 6 kGy.The bio-toxicity of PCP was also reduced after irradiation.
