The effects of canal wall down tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy on chronic suppurative otitis media

Objective To explore the different therapeutic effects of canal wall down tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy on chronic suppurative otitis media(CSOM).Methods 13 cases of canal wall down tympanoplasty and 38 cases of mastoidectomy on CSOM were performed from March 2000 to January 2006,and the different effects were contradistinguished.Results After 6 months to 6 years of follow-up,all the cases of canal wall down tympanoplasty had dry ear without recurrence,the rate of hearing restoration and improvement in 0.5、1.0、2.0 KHz PTA was 84.6%.The recurrence rate of mastoidectomy was 52.6%,the rate of hearing restoration and improvement was 23.7%.Conclusion The therapeutic effects of canal wall-down typmanoplasty on CSOM had advantages over those of mastodiectomy in recurrence,removal of lesions and hearing restoration and improvement.The operation of canal wall-down tympanoplasty could being adjusted appropriately for simultaneous auditory rehabilitation.
