Abstract

D.Sperber D.Wilson have proposed Relevance Theory(RT) with the aim to guide communicative activities from a cognitive perspective.Translation is a subordinate term to communication, therefore the theory has a definite impact on translation.According to RT,human's cognitive activities tend to coincide with Most Relevance Principle whereas people are likely to be looking for the optimal relevance in their communication. And the essence of translation is to make intentions(of the author) and expectations(of the readers) meet, that is,a process of reconstruction of the Optimal Relevance. The distinctive features of different nations result in the challenges in translation.Hence, how to achieve coherence out of diverse cultural images in translation? The Principle of Optimal Relevance in Relevance Theory serves the function of an enlightener for translators.
