Application of Biofragmentable Anastomosis Ring in Alimentary Tract Reconstruction

Abstract

Objective To summarize the experience in the use of the biofragmentable anastomosis ring(BAR) in intestinal anastomoses.Methods The clinical data of 64 patients,who underwent intestinal anastomoses performed with BAR between 1992 and 1999,were analyzed retrospectively.Results No death or anastomotic stenosis occurred.A clinical anastomotic leak developed in the first two weeks after surgery in one patient(1.6%),who required reoperation and then recovered well.Early incomplete smallbowel obstruction developed in two patients(3.1%),neither of whom required reoperation.The average time to pass the first flatus was 3.2 days,and the average time to begin oral fluid intake was 3.3 days.Conclusion Our data indicate that the use of BAR is safe and effective in both elective and emergent surgical operation.The rate of leakage is comparable to that of literature when BAR is used.The use of BAR in digestive tract reconstruction could raise efficiency,shorten operative time,and prevent the complication of anastomotic leak or stricture.
