Phacoemulsification in Patients with Cataract and Secondary Angle Closure Glaucoma

Abstract

To evaluate the effect of phacoemulsification in patients with cataract and secondary angle closure glaucoma caused by lens abnormality 27 eyes with secondary angle closure glaucoma and cataract underwent phacoemulsification with foldable posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation were studied retrospectively, including 19 eyes with secondary acute angle closure glaucoma, 8 eyes with secondary chronic angle closure glaucoma After a mean postoperative follow up period of (19±11) months, no severe complication was observed in these patients postoperatively or within the operation procedure The correct visual acuity was improved from (0 11±0 07) to (0 35±0 19) after the operation (P0 05) The mean intraocular pressures and the number of antiglaucoma medications reduced respectively from (4 09±1 61)kPa and (2 67±0 24) sorts of drugs preoperatively to (2 03±0 72)kPa and (0 87±0 42) sorts of drugs postoperatively The mean depth of anterior chamber changed from (1 25±0 56)mm preoperatively to(2 43±0 67)mm postoperatively Some part of the closed chamber angle reopened [Conclusion] Phacoemulsification with posterior chamber foldable intraocular lens implantation can be a good alternative in treating secondary angle closure glaucoma with cataract.
