Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of posterior capsulorhexis and intraocular lens(IOL) optic capture on surgical outcomes of congenital cataract. Methods Posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis with IOL optic capture was performed in 32 congenital cataract patients(36 eyes).Follow-up was at least 24 months. Results Implantation of in of the bag intraocular lens with optic capture was successfully performed in all eyes.Postoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA) improved in all patients.Specifically,33 eyes(91.7%) obtained 0.3 or better, and 22 eyes(61.1%) achieved 0.5 or better. The central posterior capsule opacification was minimal(grade 0) in twenty-seven eyes(75.0%).Grade 1 opacification was observed in four eyes(11.1%).In three eyes(8.3%) the opacification was grade 3 and in two eyes was grade 3(5.6%).There was no grade 4 opacification or retinal complications in all cases. Conclusion Posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis and optic capture of the intraocular lens in congenital cataract is effective in the prevention of secondary opacification and can help the recovery of visual function.
