Abstract

Objective: The study was undertaken to quantitatively measure the range and the external dimensions of lateral mass of atlas, and to provide the anatomic basis for the application of lateral mass screws in atlas fixation. Methods: The width, thickness and the height of C 1 lateral mass were measured respectively at the 30 atlas specimens from fresh cadavers, while the diameter of atlantoaxial joint surface and the obliquity of atlantoaxial joint were surveyed. Results: The mean width of atlas lateral mass is 15.47±1.19 mm, thickness 17.21±0.93 mm, transverse diameter of atlantoaxial joint surface 17.90±1.18 mm, longitudinal diameter of atlantoaxial joint surface 15.36±1.04 mm, and the obliquity of atlantoaxial joint surface in coronary plane is 34.57±3.77 degrees. Conclusion: we may conclude that there is enough space to settle lateral mass screw in posterior cervical fixation according those parameters of the lateral mass of atlas.
