Abstract
A kaolinite/benzamide intercalation compound was prepared by melting intercalation method using a kaolinite/dimetyl sulfoxide intercalation compound as an intermediate. The product was characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy . Experimental results show that the basal spacing of kaolinite/benzamide intercalation compound is 1.428 nm. The apparent intercalation of the product reaches to 82.5%. The experiment indicates the presence of hydrogen bonding between the inner surface hydroxyls of the kaolinite and the amino groups of benzamides in the kaolinite-benzamide intercalation compound; the benzamide is appeared to be in an approximately perpendicular position in the lamination of kaolinte. The bonded benzamide is liberated between 140-180 ℃.
