Abstract

Objective To explore the correlation of nurses’ job satisfaction with their self-concept and professional self-concept.Methods A survey was conducted in 338 pediatric nurses from a children’s hospital through Tennessee Self-Concept Scale(TSCS),Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument(PSCNI) and Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire Short-Form(MSQ).The correlation was analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis, with dimensions of job satisfaction as dependent variables and self-concept and professional self-concept as independent variables. Results Positive correlations were detected between self-concept and job satisfaction, professional self-concept and job satisfaction of pediatric nurses.Psychological self and word flexibility were the two major factors affecting intrinsic satisfaction, and psychological self, communication ability,self-identity and physical self were the major factors affecting extrinsic satisfaction and general satisfaction by stepwise regression analysis. Conclusion Pediatric nurses’ self-concept and their professional self-concept were significantly correlated with job satisfaction.Therefore,self-concept and professional self-concept are predictors of job satisfaction.
