Abstract
Powder metal forged connecting rods possess unique characteristics such as light weight, less machining stock, high strength and excellent quality consistence. As a result, powder metal forged connecting rods are widely used in high performance gasoline and diesel engines worldwide. In order to meet the need of future high performance engines,a series of powder materials are developed. In this paper, the effects of these materials on the mechanical properties and the strength of manufactured connecting rods are investigated and summarized.Comparisons are made regarding connecting rod strength and failure mechanisms between forged steel rods and powder metal forged rods. The results show that connecting rods made of new materials have much higher strength, better quality consistence and better manufacturability.
