Abstract

Research progress in cadmium toxicity mechanisms and the antagonistic mechanisms of selenium to cadmium were reviewed. The toxic effects of cadmium are relevant to the cadmium-induced free radicals and lipid peroxidation and the effects of cadmium on other elements. They also have close relationship with metallothionein. The antagonism of selenium to cadmium is due to the antiox-idative effects of selenium, the formation of Se-Cd complexes and the selenium-induced redistribution of cadmium in vivo.
