Abstract

Special verb sentences are an important type of grammatical phenomena closely related to the conversion of parts of speech in Old Chinese, and can be categorized from a semantic viewpoint. To analyze them, a general categorization is preferable to a detailed or complex one. In view of its semantic vagueness and indefiniteness, verb object (OV) construction with the meaning of“V for O”needs no sub categorization. Verbs in VO constructions of this sort can either be causative or static. The ambiguity is ascribable to the referent embodied by the object following a converted verb (from a noun or adjective). Ambiguity arises if the referent is not in or has not reached a given state before the exertion of influence by the subject.
