Study of Intima-media Thickness of Carotid Artery in Aged Patients with Cerebral Infarction

Objective To investigate the characteristics of the structural change of carotid artery in aged patients with cerebral infarction.Methods 80 patients with cerebral infarction were divided into 2 groups according to age:aged group with age60 years(40 patints),non-aged group with age≤60 years(40 patients).The intima-media thickness(IMT),the incidence of carotid plaque and the number of carotid plaque were measured by ultrasonography in 80 patients and 36 normal centrels.These parameters were compared among these groups.Results IMT,the incidence of carotid plaque and the number of carotid plaque in patients with acute cerebral infarction were higher than those of normal controls.IMT,the incidencc of carotid plaque and the number of carotid plaque in aged patients were higher than those of non-aged ones.Conclusions IMT,the incidnee of carotid plaque and the number of carotid plaque in aged patients with cerebral infarction were higher than those of non-aged ones,As a no-harm and convenience approach for atherosclerosis,carotid ultrasonography plays an important guiding role on assessment of disease degree and treatment in cerebral infarction.
