Application of Constructed Wetland to Stormwater Management in New Urban Catchments

Abstract

Constructed wetlands are becoming increasingly popular in urban stormwater management for their low investment,easy management and ecological effect.Taking Putrajaya wetland in Malaysia as example,the application of constructed wetland technology to catchment stormwater management is introduced.The multiple objectives of water quality purification,hydraulic regulation,landscape esthetics and ecological rehabilitation are taken into account as a whole in the design of Putrajaya wetland in order to ensure that the lake water quality meets the standard required for body contact recreation,increase the flood control capacity,rehabilitate and improve the ecological environment and improve urban living conditions.A multi-cell and multi-stage design is adopted to increase hydraulic performance and purification capacity,maximize areas for planting macrophytes and facilitate maintenance of the wetlands.The operation results for about ten years show that the constructed wetland is effective in stormwater runoff control.
