A survey on STD/AIDS-related knowledge and sex behavior among sex workers in a community

Abstract

Objective To explore the knowledge of STD/AIDS and high-risk behaviors related to HIV/AIDS among female sex workers in a community of Guangdong province. To provide information for making STD/AIDS-related policies and strategies. Methods A town in the middle of Guangdong province was selected and 139 female sex workers were interviewed face-to-face. Results The awareness rate of the STDs symptoms for female and male was 14.4% and 18.0%, respectively. 86.1% reported using condom consistently. Conclusions The STD/AIDS-related knowledge was little among female sex workers in the community, and there were some high-risk sex behaviors. Health education and behavioral intervention were in urgent need to improve their knowledge about HIV/AIDS and prevent HIV from high-risk groups to general population.
