Abstract
This study aimed at clarifying the action of male reproductive system infected with white spot syndrome virus(WSSV)on the vertical transmission of WSSV in shrimp Fenneropenaeus chinensis.Male shrimp was infected with WSSV artificially through feeding, which was further conformed by using nest-PCR(nest polymerase chain reaction). The spermatophores of male shrimp infected with WSSV were transplanted into the thelycum of healthy mature female, and then the shrimps were induced to spawn in laboratory under the conditions of excluding any other transmission sources of WSSV.The fertilizing rates, hatching rates and metamorphosis rates of the filial generation in each test group were counted and analyzed. The samples, including spermatophore, ovary, muscle, fertilized eggs, nauplius and zoea from different test groups, were inspected by using nest-PCR.The results showed that WSSV could be transmitted from paternal shrimp to the filial generation through spermatophores infected with WSSV,and that the WSSV infection did not produce significant effect on the fertilizing rate, however, the hatching rate in test groups was found significantly lower than that in the control(P=0.0450.05).Apparently,WSSV infection could influence the hatching of shrimp eggs and metamorphosis of shrimp larva, thus resulting in abnormal development of partial larva and high mortality.
