Abstract

Although natural resources are poor, the resources of ports and harbors are very rich in Japan. Through the analysis of the conditions of ports harbors and the course of ports development in Japan, this paper points out the characteristics of ports development: 1) development of ports with economic development; 2) top ports gathering in the region within three bays and one sea, where they are the most concentrated ports in the world; 3) constructions in the land area such as warehouse, inland collecting distributing systems and industrial zone by ports; 4) constructions of the special berths that raises efficiency greatly. The development of ports in Japan promotes development of foreign trade, heavy industries, chemical industries and industries nearby the sea.
