Comparison of bumble bees(B.lucorum) and honey bees(A.mellifera) as pollinators for Watermelon grown in plastic house culture

Abstract

The comparative experiment of bumble bees and honey bees as pollinators for strawberry grown in plastic house culture,the result showed that average fruit weight of watermelons by bumblebees pollination were higher than those by honeybee pollination, but there were no significant differents(P0.05). yields of watermelons in unit area were higher,there were no significantly differents(P0.05). The type of watermelons were better, there were significantly differents(P0.05). Vitamin c were higher, and increasing 0.14%. Percentage sugars were higher, increasing 2.22%. the rate of sugar and acidity were higher, and increasing 2.23%. lower, Total Soluble Solid(TSS ) were lower,decreasing 2.04%. Nitrates were same. The experiment results prove that bumblebees are more suitable to pollinate for watermelons grown in greenhouses, bumblebees pollination may substitute for honey bees pollination.
