Abstract

OBJECTIVE To explore the postoperative recurrence factors and effect of reoperative therapy of thyroglossal duct cyst or fistula in children.METHODS Clinical data of 23 children with recurrent thyroglossal duct cysts or fistula from 2007 to 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. The reoperative method was extended Sistrunk technique.RESULTS All of the 23 cases got satisfied results after repeat operation. There were no complications, such as dysphonia, aspiration and dyspnea, occurred. No recurrence was found after follow up for more than 2 years.Remaining the middle part of the hyoid bone and thyroglossal exiguous branches were the main recurrent factors.CONCLUSION The extended Sistrunk technique can reduce the recurrence of recurrent thyroglossal duct cysts or fistula in children.
