Abstract

Objective To discuss the effect of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery(VATS) on the treatment of acute empyema. Methods Thirty-eight cases of acute empyema were treated by VATS(Group A,n=14) and conventional therapy(thoracentesis, chest tube drainage or thoracotomy debridement)(Group B,n=24),respectively.Postoperative parameters of the two groups were analysed. Results The duration of chest tube drainage and hospitalization in Group A was shorter than that in group B(4.2±1.3)d vs(7.5±2.2)d,(11.2±3.8)d vs(18.7±5.6)d,respectively(P0.01).The ratio that acute empyema turned into chronic one was 0 in Group A and 25% in Group B.Conclusion VATS for acute empyema is more efficacious and less traumatic, and the duration of treatment is shorter.VATS will be regard as the first option to treat acute empyema.
