Abstract

Objective:To investigate the neuron number and apoptosis in hippocampus in rats treated with reserpine. Methods:Reserpine was injected(i.p.)in rats and the behaviors were checked with locomotor activity.Niss's staining was used to observe the numbers of hippocapal neurons, and TUNEL was used to investigate apoptosis of hippocampal neurons. Results:The behavioral depresssion could be caused at 48 hours after intraperitoneal injection of reserpine(4 mg/kg).Reserpine decreased the number of neurons in hippocampal in CA1(P0.01),CA3(P0.05)and dentate gyrus(P0.001),while the neuronal apoptosis increased in these three areas(CA1 region P0.01,CA3 region P0.001,dentate gyrus region P0.001).Conclusion:The number of hippocampal neurons decreases and the apoptosis increases in the behavioral depressed rats induced by reserpine.
