Abstract
The characteristics of karst development in Dongzhuang reservoir were detailed by the study of carbonate strata sedimentary environment in the north area of the Weihe river and the background of regional karst development. The results revealed that the deposition of carbonate rocks occurred in the Cambrian to Ordovician. The karst of the research area was divided into four formative periods which was according to the two depositional discontinuity periods after the carbonate rocks was formed, and the four periods of karst were the karst formed in the period of Cambrian to Ordovician, late middle Ordovician to Carboniferous, late Triassic to Recent period and Quaternary to present. The conclusion is that the dam can be built because the engineering area had no conditions to form the connected pipeline and large-scale deep karst which there was no ancient karst existed and the modern karst mainly developed in valley slope.
