Abstract

AIM To investigate whether left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is an risk factor for Binswanger's disease (BD) in older persons with hypertension. METHODS 194 hypertensive patients with or without BD were investigated. We analysed the clinical features such as the age, LVH, the duration of hypertention and systolic, diastolic blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia and smoking. RESULTS In the univariate analysis, the age, LVH, the duration of hypertention and systolic blood pressure werestatistically significant risk factors of BD in older persons with hypertension. The multivariate analysis revealed that LVH was still a significant risk factor with the age, the duration of hypertention, and systolic blood pressure as covariates in a logistic model (OR=3.28; 95%CI, 1.48-7.31; P = 0.004 ). CONCLUSION LVH is a risk factor for BD in older persons with hypertension.
