Abstract

In this paper the relationship between the density of wood obtained from Eucalyptus urophyllahybrid clone U6 and the rate at which this absorbs water were studied. The results revealed a strong negative relationship between these parameters with a highly significant correlation(r =-0.923) indicating that the higher the wood density the lower its water absorption rate. A regression equation for predicting water adsorption based on wood density had the same correlation coefficient and an estimated accuracy of 99.0%. It was also found that the wood density and the rate at which this can absorb water, varied markedly with height within the trunks of trees of clone U6. With different soils types, tree growth was found to differ markedly as did both wood density and the rate at which wood from the trees can absorb water.
