Abstract

Aim: To explore the relationship between cerebral vasospasm following aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage and expression of serum vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF).Methods: Serum VEGF concentration was detected by ELISA kit.The experimental group included twenty seven cases complicated by different degrees of cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and the control group included ten healthy volunteers. Results: The serum VEGF levels of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients were significantly higher than healthy volunteers at each time points. The serum VEGF content didn’t increase in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients without cerebral vasospasm. The serum VEGF levels of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients who were complicated with mild cerebral vasospasm had no statistical difference from that of the patients with moderate cerebral vasospasm at day 1,3,5,7 and the serum VEGF levels in those patients who were complicated with severe cerebral vasospasm were significantly higher than that of the patients with mild and moderate cerebral vasospasm at all time points. The serum VEGF levels in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients who evolved cerebral infarction were significantly higher than that of patients without cerebral infarction. Conclusion: The serum VEGF levels increased significantly in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients with cerebral vasospasm and the patients who evolved cerebral infarction, which suggested that it could reflect the degree of cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.
