Status and prospect of aromatic hybrid rice

The improvement of the grain quality of the hybrid rice is one of the difficult and hotspot problems in rice breeding for a long time.The theory and technology of aromatic hybrid rice was proposed by Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center in 1989,and the first male sterile lines Xiangxiang 2 A and combination Xiangyou 63 of aromatic hybrid rice with good quality were bred.For twenty years,more than10 aromatic male sterile lines and 40 aromatic rice hybrids have been released in China.Some foreign research institutions especially the International Rice Research Institute and Indian Academy of Agricultural Sciences also bred a series of aromatic hybrid rice combinations,and they have achieved important accomplishment on the genetic expression and molecular biotechnological breeding of aroma characters.The extension and application of aromatic hybrid rice enriched the theory and practice of hybrid rice.In the present study,the accomplishments on aromatic hybrid rice breeding,genetic expression and biotechnological improvement of aroma characters,etc.were summarized to provide reference for further research in future.
