The Role of MRI in Diagnosis of Bell Palsy and Ramsay-Hunt Syndrome

Abstract

Objective To investigate MRI findings in Bell palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome.Materials and Methods Contrast-enhanced MRI was obtained in 10 patients,including 7 cases of Bell palsy and 3 cases of Ramsay Hunt syndrome.The MR signal intensities of 38 segments of each facial nerve were obtained,which contained labyrinthine segment,geniculate segment,segment in cavum tympani and segment in mastoid process.Results Post-contrast MRI images showed the signal intensities of 26 segments of affected facial nerve were higher than that of contralateral facial nerve,including geniculate segment(9/26,34.6%),segment in cavum tympani(7/26,26.9%),segment in mastoid process(6/26,23.1%)and labyrinthine segment(4/26,15.4%),with statistical difference(P0.01).Conclusion MRI could be helpful for diagnosis of Bell palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
