Abstract

Effects of panax notoginseng saponins(PNS) on anti-oxygen free radical were studied in spinal cord injury(SCI) rats. 48 Wistar rats were submitted to Allen's technique 250g·cm onto surgically exposed dorsal surface of spinal cord T_(13) ̄L_1. PNS was administered at 30 min(100mg/kg). 2 and 4h(50mg/kg) post traumaticly. The effect was compared with that of a know drug on reduction free radical-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and control. PNS treatment provided significant reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) production and prevented reduction of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of the spinal cord tissue in comparison with the control. Morphologic findings were less slight hemorrhage and necrosis in the grey matter, less demylinization and swelling of the mitochondrions. The results showed that PNS inhibited the lipid oxidation and prevented secondary damage on early SCI.Author's address (The Affiliated Ninth Hospital of Shanghai Second Medical University, Shanghai,200011)
