Abstract

The leaf epidermal and transverse section characteristics of 11 perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne) varieties were observed and counted using free-hand section and paraffin section methods. The results showed that the different varieties of perennial ryegrass leaf epidermal cell shapes were regular and aligned. In the leaf epidermal structure, the average cell number per unit area changed greatly among different varieties of perennial ryegrass. The stomata density would increase and the average stomata area would become smaller when the leaf epidermal cell number was large. At the same time, the average thickness of the upper epidermis varied greatly among the different varieties. The vascular bundle number of the perennial ryegrass leaf would decrease when the thickness of the primary veins, the upper epidermis and lower epidermis became larger;especially when the upper epidermis’ thickness increased, the vascular bundle number would reduced significantly.
