Abstract
The two commentaries written by Wen Yi duo on The Goddess are important books in the new poetic history. While praising highly the spirit of the times of The Goddess, he criticized it “lacking the national color” and having serious tendency of Europeanization. Therefore he put forward the important viewpoint that Chinese new poetry “should be a piece of brocade woven by the longitude lines of times and the latitude lines of the nation.” He conscientiously carried out the literary viewpoint when he produced The Red Candle himself, making vivid national color become its apparent aesthetic feature.
