Abstract

Objective:To study the approaches to blocking maxillary nerve for prevention of complication.Method: Skull pterygopalatine fossa in 120 adult cases and adjoining structures of maxillary nerve in 30 adult necropsies were measured.Results:The depth of needle in maxillary nerve block:(1)Lateral approach method:The distance between the lower edge of the center of zygoma and the bottom of the pterygopalatine fossa,the male were 47.15±1.07 mm and 46.41±1.01 mm for the left and right side respectively,the female were 45.53±1.06 mm and 44.69±0.99 mm for the left and right side respectively.(2)Lateral and front approach method:The distance from the joint of coronoid process of mandible and the lower edge of zygoma to the bottom of the pterygopalatine fossa,the male were 52.35±0.75mm and 52.78±0.84mm for the left and right side respectively,and the female were 49.71±0.79 mm and 49.94±0.82 mm for the left and right side respectively.Conclusion:This study provides reference data for the depth of needle insertion and anatomical basis for the prevention of complications caused by the blocking of the maxillary nerve.
