Abstract
On base of the summary of the distribution of proved reserves from different ages and the correlation between oil and source rocks in the Gulf of Mexico,it is concluded that Upper Jurassic source rocks are the best ones in the region.The data show that the main controlling factors of Upper Jurassic source rocks are stable tectonics and hyper saline/reducing environments.Among them,Upper Jurassic source rocks mainly formed in the hyper saline carbonate evaporite sedimentary environment,belonging to hemi-pelagic reducing environments,and organic matters are dominated by algae.Therefore,it is inferred that the organic matters from Upper Jurassic source rocks could be related with the algae thriving under the extreme drought weather.
