A survey on condom use and related behaviors among 1295 men who have sex with men in six cities of China

Objective To understand condom use among gays/men who have with men(MSM) in six cities and provide evidence for the promotion of correct condom use among MSM.Methods Target sample drawing(rolling a snowball) was employed and transverse anonymous research was developed for MSM in six cities of China.Data were analyzed by SPSS 11.0.Results A total of 1295 valid questionnaires were collected,and the median age of the respondents was 24.929 cases(74.4%) had the first intercourse with a male sexual partner and the median age was 19;410 cases(32.3%) did not use condom during the first mainly because they did not realize its usage and not considered it as a necessity for MSM.In the past six months,724 cases(63.2%) used condom frequently or for most of time when having sex,and 210 cases(18.3%) virtually did not use condom;160 cases(12.4%) ever had non-consensus experience with male partners,of them 31 cases used condom;99 cases(7.6%) ever experienced group and 40 cases persisted in condom use;213 cases(16.4%) bled while having sexual intercourse and 83 cases used condom;54 cases(4.2%) participated in buying sex and 18 cases used condom;60 cases(4.6%) were drug users and 13 cases used condom.448 cases(35.5%) did not used condom at the last sexual intercourse thinking it was unnecessary to use condom or simply disliked to use it.Conclusion There are many factors associated with condom use among gay/MSM.Interventions should be tailored to different conditions so as to improve the acceptance level and condom use rate among this population group.
