Abstract

In this paper, the cavitation performance of a double-suction pump is studied by experiments and simulations. To obtain more accurate simulation results, the turbulence model and the cavitation model are improved and added to the CFX through the second development technology.Subsequently, the numerical results under the non-cavitation and cavitation conditions are compared with the experimental data. The comparison shows that the numerical prediction can truly predict the energy characteristics and cavitation characteristics of the double-suction pump.In addition, for a more comprehensive study of the cavitating flows in the double suction pump, not only vapor volume fraction distribution in impeller and cavity distribution in the suction chamber, but the static pressure distribution on intermediate cutting plane of pump and total pressure distribution in impeller passage are analyzed. The present study illustrates that the main reason for the decline of the pump performance is the development of cavitation, and the simulation can truly reflect the cavitation performance of the double-suction pump, thus providing a good reference for the optimization design of the pump.
