Abstract
Because of its hypervariability,neutrality,co-dominance and ubiquity in eukaryotic genomes, microsatellite DNA is becoming preferred molecular marker for population genetic studies,as well as for strain identification, kinship analysis, and mapping purpose. The paper presents the structural and functional characteristics of microsatellite DNA systematically, and shows the genetic mechanism for application of microsatellite DNA marker and its general methods. It is also discussed that microsatellite DNA marker is utilized in genetic diversity research nowadays and its development in the future.
