Abstract

So-called zeitgeist fully embodies the fundamental values of a certain age.Any writer with strong sense of vocation is always sensitive to the zeitgeist of his age.Generally speaking, his understanding of zeitgeist comes from his perceptual and intuitionistic experience.Lu Xun's understanding of the zeitgeist of the Age of Chinese Enlightenment is based on his perceptual experience and fully reflected in his fictions, which is both penetrating ideologically and appealing artistically.Mao Dun's The Midnight is a full representation of the zeitgeist of a turbulent age and the summit what the left-wing literature could achieve. He moulds his theme and characters according to the revolutionary rationality and makes the author's self invisible. He writes more rationally at the expense of artistic quality.
