EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY IN RESIDENTS OF COASTAL AREA IN SHANDONG PROVINCE

Objective To identify the prevalence of overweight and obesity in residents over 18 years old in coastal area of Shandong province. Methods A random stratified cluster sampling was conducted,and 5 732 inhabitants were investigated for prevalence of overweight and obesity in coastal cities of Shandong province,including Qingdao,Yantai,Weihai,Rizhao and Dongying.The diagnosis of overweight and obesity was based on WHO criteria. Results The total prevalence of overweight was38.03%,of which,male accounted for 36.62% and female 39.08%.The total prevalence of obesity was 8.06%,of which,male accounted for 6.34% and female 9.34%.The prevalence of obesity between men and women was statistically different(χ2=16.97,P0.01),while the prevalence of overweight between men and women showed no significant difference(χ2=3.60,P0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of overweight and obesity are significantly increased in coastal area of Shandong in recent years.A study on prevention and cure of overweight and obesity should be carried out as early as possible.
