The different cut-off point of waist circumference for influencing on prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Chinese Uygur,Han and Kazak adults

Abstract

Objective To investigate and analyse the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome(MS)in Chinese Uygur,Han and Kazak adults using the criteria of different cut-off point of waist circumference.Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Xinjiang Urumqi city,Hetian and Altay region with a representative sample of Chinese Uygur,Han and Kazak adults from 20 to 74 years of age.The sample was randomly selected using stratified cluster sampling.Results Diagnosed by using cut-off point of waist circumference≥90 cm in male and ≥80 cm in female for all subjects,the crude prevalence of MS was 42.1%,16.7% and 9.5% in Uygur,Han and Kazak respectively.When the cut-off point of waist circumference was adjusted to ≥93 cm and ≥89 cm in Uygur male and female,to ≥85 cm and ≥80 cm in Han male and female and to ≥99 cm and ≥88 cm in Kazak male and female,the crude prevalence was 25.6%,20.3% and 6.9% and the age adjusted prevalence was 17.6%,13.4% and 4.5% in Uygur,han and Kazak respectively.Conclusions Adjusting the cut-off point of waist circumference according to national characteristics will decrease the misdiagnosis of the prevalence of MS in Uygur and Kazak and the missed diagnosis of it in Han.
