Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to discuss the function and characteristics of ArcGIS and MapGIS in compiling the map for General Land Use Planning for reducing workload and improving work efficiency. The methods used are data management, data editing, intelligent labeling, representation of drawing, production of frame, support of symbol library etc,in order to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of ArcGIS and MapGIS based on practical experience of compiling map of General Land Use Planning in several cities and counties of Guangxi. The results indicated that 1) ArcGIS can reduce the workload of compiling map with the function modules of Maplex and Representation, but it should improve production of frame and support of symbol library for mapping the land use plans;2) MapGIS meets the map norm of land use planning well on production of frame and support of symbol library, but it should increase some functions of intelligent labeling and representation of drawing to reduce workload. The paper concludes that there are many effective ways to improve the efficiency of compiling map of Land Use Planning, including using the functional modules of ArcGIS and MapGIS reasonably, and properly applying it with further practical development.
