Abstract

China is the largest cotton production country in the world, with near 200 million peasants involved. The cotton industry also has a close link to textile and garment industry within which there are tens of million workers.Nevertheless,in recent years China has become the largest cotton import country.Main cotton exporting countries supply substantial subsidy to their cotton industry, enabling their cotton to enter the international cotton market with low price, which is a severe challenge to Chinese cotton industry. This paper makes an analysis on the weakness of Chinese cotton industry and the new international environment it faces, based on which some suggestions on the upgrading path of international competitiveness for Chinese cotton industry are put forward.
