ON THE ACADEMIC BACKGROUND OF WANG YUN'S THEORY OF CHINESE CHARACTERS

Chinese-character theory is man's subjective and rational concept about the objective science of Chinese characters.It sprouted in Pre-Qin Period and formally came into being with the theory of interpreting meaning according to word form and the Chinese hexateuch theory in Shuo Wen.Its development in Tang,Song,Yuan and Ming dynasties was mainly manifested in birth of Chinese characters,the development of phonograms and the relation between Chinese and Chinese characters.It came into prosperity in the Qing Dynasty and its development was manifested mainly in its archaic phonology thought and word annotation theory by Du Yucai.Under such a background,the Chinese-character ideology of Wang Yun can be summarized as follows: with the premise of a comparatively scientific linguistic view and in the framework of the Chinese hexateuch theory,his ideas about formation of Chinese characters,phonograms,the development of Chinese characters and ancient Chinese characters as well as his achievements are the main components of his theory.
