Abstract
Based on the continuous equation of sediment transport and comprehensive analyzing of field data from middle Yangtze River, a relationship between λ V (sediment deposition ratio of Luoshan\|Hankou reach to Dongting Lake) and λ S (sediment diversion ration from Yangtze River to Dongting lake) is obtained. The study shows that total amount of sediment deposition in the region remain around 180 million tons. Decreasing of λ S not only leads to the amount of sediment deposition reduction in the Dongting lake, but also increasing amount of sediment deposition from Luoshan to Hankou reach and also elevating the water level in the middle reach of Yangtze River. So the key to relieving the flood disaster in the middle Yangtze River is how to eliminate the 180 million tons sediment deposition in this region.
