The influence of childhood abuse on the suicide possibility in adults

Objective To explore the influence of childhood abuse on suicide possibility in adults. Methods 564 urban adults in Tianjin recruited by stratified random sampling were investigated with Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form( CTQ-SF) and self-designed suicide attitude scale. Results Score of childhood physical abuse was significantly higher in males than that in females( P 0. 01). Score of childhood emotional neglect was significantly higher in females than that in males( P 0. 05). The frequency of suicide ideation was significantly lower in males than that in females( P 0. 05). Correlation analysis indicated that the suicide ideation was negatively correlated with childhood physical abuse,emotional abuse,sexual abuse and emotional neglect( P 0. 01). The suicide attempt was negatively correlated with childhood physical abuse,emotional abuse and sexual abuse( P 0. 01 or 0. 05). While the suicide acceptability was positively correlated with childhood physical abuse,emotional abuse,sexual abuse and emotional neglect( P 0. 01 or 0. 05). The regression analysis showed that childhood emotional abuse,sexual abuse and emotional neglect were independent influencing factors of suicide ideation( P 0. 05).Conclusion Suicide ideation,suicide attempt and suicide acceptability in adults are associated with the experiences of childhood abuse.
