Abstract

The developments and uses of drilling fluid systems for non conventional wells abroad are reviewed and following topics are covered. ① Horizontal drilling fluids: Aphron drill in fluid micro bubbles; selected polymer drilling fluids; mixed metal hydroxide (MMH) drilling fluid; low salinity polyglycol water based drilling fluid. ② Extended reach drilling fluids: low toxicity oil based drilling fluids; synthetic based drilling fluids; water in oil emulsified fluid with special surfactant convertible to oil in water one. ③ Slim hole drilling fluids: formate drilling fluids; polyol/potassium carbonate water based drilling fluid; cationic polymer/brine fluids (CBF). ④ Other noo conventional drilling fluids: coiled tubing (CT) drilling fluid; selected fluids for multibranch hole drilling; underbalanced drilling fluids; casing drilling fluids.
