Abstract
The process of esterification of propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PM) was investigated with acetic acid to synthesize propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PMA) by using 98% sulfuric acid as catalyst. The influences on the yield of product of mole ratio of acetic acid to PM, quantity of the catalyst, quantity and kinds of feedstock, reaction time, and reaction temperature was studied. The optimum conditions are as follow: The mole ratio of acetic acid/ propylene glycol minomethyl ether is 1.3∶1, the amount of sulfuric acid 1.0%, the amount of feedstock 25%, reaction temperature 104~110℃,and reaction time 3 hours. Under the optimum conditions, the yield of PMA is 96 5%.
