Abstract
Five castrated male goats with permanent rumen fistulae were used to study the effects of CS(15mg/kgBW, added to food everyday over 8d) on rumen digestion and metabolism. At the end of the experiment, the concentrations of MCP and NH3-N increased by 22.61%(P0.01) and 18.13%(P0.05). TVFA of the rumen fluid was 18.86% higher (P0.01), while Acetate% increased by 2.05 percentage point(P0.001), Propionate% decreased by 2.45 percentage point(P0.001), as a result the Acetate:Propionate ratio elevated to 5.84 from 4.87(P0.001), which changed the ruminal fermentation type. At the same time, hay intake increased by 13.65%(P0.05), compared to that of control. But no significant changes were found in the disappearance rate (48h)of DM and CF. The result indicates that oral delivery of CS also improves rumen fermentation. At the same time, blood GH increased 29.38%(P0.05) and SS concentration tended to lower 13.30%(P=0.25)..8 6%high
