Effect of microsurgery through transcallosal interforniceal approach for tumors in third ventricle

Abstract

Objective To investigate the operative effect of removing the tumors in the third ventricle by transcallosal interforniceal approach.Methods 15 patients with tumors of the third ventricle were operated on via the approach of transcallosal-interfornix.9 tumors located at the anterior part of the third ventricle,3 tumors at the middle part and 3 tumors at the posterior part.12 cases of them were accompanied with hydrencephaly in various degrees.After surgery no patient fell in coma.Result Under the operative microscope,the tumors were totally removed in 11 cases, subtotally in 3 cases,and partially in 1 case.The recent complications included diabetes insipidus in 5 cases,intracranial infection in 2 cases,which were relieved within 1-2 weeks after clinical therapy.Long-term complications included 3 cases of transient recent memory impairment,which disappeared after 1-3 months.Conclusions The tumors which located in the third ventricle can be removed via this approach.It cause slight damage to the brain tissue,and the postoperative complications were rare.
